Dad Crafts for Kids
Tuesday is crafts day at our house, and the kids really look forward to creating something new. After brainstorming for a few minutes we decided to make a few homemade air fresheners. There were a few helpful sites, but we landed on Delightful Country Cookin as our air freshener guide. You wont need to set aside much time for this craft. From start to soothing smell will take you about 10 minutes. With not a whole lot going on in this craft I decided to have the boys participate in every step. We did have to run off to the store for Gelatin, but everything else we already had. Basically these beautiful homemade air fresheners cost about a dollar to make. Right up my alley, cheap.
Homemade Air Fresheners
Here is what you will need to make your very own air fresheners:
- Measuring cup
- Small Pot
- Salt ( Keeps gel from molding )
- Unflavored Gelatin
- Food Coloring
- Essential Oils
- Small Glass Containers
- Disposable Stirrer
Now that you have everything you need lets get started. The first thing we did was set up our glass containers with food coloring and essential oils. You only need 3 drops of food coloring for each container and about 20-30 drops of your favorite smelling essential oil. Once we finished sniffing each vial of 10 different oils mommy had ( this is why it takes 10 minutes instead of 5 ) we decided on the scent. Next,we brought 1 cup of water to a boil. When the water came to a boil we whisked in Gelatin (4 packs) until completely dissolved. Then, we added 1 cup of cold water and a tablespoon of salt to the mix and whisked until salt was completely dissolved. Finally, we took the mix over to our glass containers and filled them about 2/3 full. After they sit over night to harden, you will have a homemade air freshener that will last about a month.
This was a great craft to do with the kids. Quick and easy with minimal clean up. These homemade air fresheners are a perfect Mothers’ Day idea, or maybe just a “thinking of you grandma” creation.
