Living in the southeast is a great place to be throughout the year; the one downfall is that we do not have a lot of seasonal color changes. It is easy to Find beauty in the Fall. We are subjected to creating our own “man-made” color changes. In the past I have made lettuce pots, which is a lot of fun since you can use a variety of types for color and have fresh lettuce anytime! This fall I’m looking forward to doing some planting for the different holidays that are coming up by adding rich colors to the landscape. I saw this great idea on Pinterest that uses a hollowed out pumpkin as the container of sorts. I love getting my Fall gardening ideas on Pinterest, there are so many creative people who post there.
Using A Pumpkin As A Planter
Using a pumpkin as a planter is such a unique idea! For this particular project, once the pumpkin is hollowed out, you then place your container plant inside of the pumpkin. I would plant a bright orange Butterfly Milkweed inside of the container. Of course to do so, I would need to prepare soil for the container. For the plant to get the best growth, I would use either the Miracle-Gro Potting Mix or the Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix. The Potting Mix allows for continuous nutrients to be released in to the soil over a 6-month period of time. Whereas the Moisture Control absorbs 33% more water than regular potting mix, this prevents plants from being overwatered. For my needs, I would use the Miracle-Gro Potting Mix since I want to make sure this particular plant gets the necessary nutrients in the container.
I really do enjoy fall gardening, not only because of all the beauty in the fall colors but also because the weather is more comfortable for outdoor gardening. I also enjoy gardening for its peace of mind; it is a great way to de-stress. It is also fun to get the kids involved, they love planting and watching their particular plants grow.
