The National Mobility Equipment Dealer Association (NMEDA) is an amazing not-for-profit association developed for people with disabilities that offer a great service for people with disabilities.  NMEDA is comprised of mobility equipment dealers, manufacturers, driver rehabilitation specialists and other professionals who are committed to expanding the mobile opportunities for people with disabilities.  All members of NMEDA work together to increase transportation opportunities, whether it is by modifying a vehicle with mobility equipment or transporting people with disabilities, they are devoted to providing a wider range of transportation options.Screen shot 2012-09-06 at 7.14.25 PM

NMEDA was originally formed as an association of mobility equipment dealers in Florida.  Then in 1989 it opened up on a national level officially establishing the National Mobility equipment Dealer Association.  This association has now grown to over 600 members, all of which are engaged in the modification of quality transportation for people with disabilities.  All members are required to conform to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and to follow the guidelines set by NMEDA.  These guidelines are updated on an annual basis.

The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) was developed to promote quality, safety, and reliability within the industry and is the current accreditation program for the mobility equipment industry.  QAP is the only accreditation program that has been developed for the mobility equipment industry.  The accreditation has now finally advanced far enough that some states are now dealers who carry out work for the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs to be a participant in QAP.  A QAP designation ensures that the highest guidelines available in the industry have been met while performing a vehicle modification and installation of mobility equipment.

When looking for a dealer, you will want to look for one that is QAP certified.  A certified dealer will guarantee that he/she is being held at the highest of guidelines.  Also, all NMEDA QAP dealers are required to provide 24-hour local emergency assistance, on-site sales and support, and offer in-person individual evaluations.  Visit the NMEDA website for more information or to locate a QAP certified dealer.NMEDA_LOGO

Having a car that has been equipped with Wheelchair accessibility is so important for those with disabilities.  Not only does it provide a safer environment in a vehicle for those who are disabled, but also offers the luxury of freedom knowing there is a vehicle that is accessible at all times.  You can visit a NMEDA QAP (Quality Assurance Program) Dealer for mobility solutions (Quality Assurance Program) Dealer for mobility solutions.
