Not everyone has a big, beautiful boat that allows them to motor into deep water in search of their favorite trophy fish. Some of us have to make due with what we have. If you are left standing on the dock while all the cool kids head out to the reef in search for supper, do not worry, the answer may lie on the beach. Beach fishing can be the most productive and fun fishing you have ever experienced. Many types of fish feed in shallow water and if you concentrate on the nearby grass flats, you might find something you never expected. Follow these three simple tips and you may be the one with the crowded supper plate.
3 Tips For Beach Fishing
- Where: Every fisherman has a different take on where the best beach to fish is. Some prefer the ledge while others target fish running in the surf. I prefer to fish over shallow grass flats. This is home to all manner of bait fish including pin fish (a trout favorite), green back anchovies, and sardines. The further out you can find a shallow sandbar, the better. Bait fish stay in the shallows to avoid larger predators. Find the bait and cast them out into deeper water.
- How: Let the wind, current, and tide help you figure out the best way to catch the big one. Also, look for other fisherman. If there are none, then you are in the wrong place or you may know something that they don’t
- When: As with most kinds of fishing, early morning or evening is usually when the fish are feeding. You really cannot get out there early enough. In a perfect world, you will have your bait in the bucket and everything in order as soon as you can see by the morning light. Go to bed early. It’s worth it.
