With two young boys to look after, I take a special interest in education happenings. I have a lot of teacher friends, too, so I know the budget cuts and financial struggles they deal with on an ongoing basis. Many times any ‘extras’ for their classrooms come right out of their meager salaries. In order to keep up with the demand for the use of technology in the classroom, many times they need help from outside sources. Thank goodness there are people and companies out there willing to donate to their cause. Hopefully, these tips can help educators help their beloved students get the tools they need to succeed.
4 great sources that help fund technology in the classroom
- Look for grants: These days a simple Google search is all it takes to find out what kind of grants are out there for teachers. Sometimes, all you have to do is submit your class and school information and state your need. Other times, you may be required to submit a lesson plan or write a short essay. Either way, it’s worth the time and effort. You won’t know if you have a shot unless you give it a try.
- Seek out recycled computers: There are programs out there that refurbish unwanted computers and put them in the hands of deserving students. Dig into the internet to perhaps come up with a free treasure or two.
- Check out donor sites: One of the newer trends is for teachers to keep a profile on a donor site. They post pictures and write short snippets about why they need the equipment or devices they are asking for and how they plan to use it in their classrooms. Individuals are able to donate any amount and if they are sponsored, large corporations will match the funds until their project is funded.
- Find and enter sweepstakes: Many companies run sweepstakes periodically that offer educators a chance to win great prizes. Most times, the forms are short and sweet. Taking a few minutes to throw your name in the hat could pay off in a big way. It’s kind of like the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play. Here’s a great one to get you started! Best Buy is promoting a current sweepstakes that will award one grand prize winner $25,000 to transform their entire school! Other prizes include $2,500.00 gift cards and a Surface Pro tablet.
Best Buy has been known for stepping up to partner with education initiatives to help get technology in the hands of young people across the country. Their Geek Squad is always on call, before, during, and after your purchase to help out with any repairs, training, or other assistance that might be needed.
